So yes it’s Mental Health Awareness Week, the Mental Health Foundation are pushing Mindfulness during this week. I thought I’d take this opportunity to make a kind of mental health master post. I first came across mindfulness during yoga and meditation classes, really in the form of focus and concentration. After a meditation class my teacher told me about this book, Mindfulness: A practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world. Inside it are some really good exercises in habit breaking and living in the moment. I will say though it’s an 8 week course with meditation twice a day. It was informative but I will admit I found it really difficult to make time to do this as well as the exercises! If you are dedicated and strong willed maybe you will be able to fare better, though I will say the exercises did help especially the routine breakers for me, definitely worth a look! The meditations also helped me relax enough to fall asleep.
One more book I used (ignore the cheesy cover) centred around Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It is called The Feeling Good Handbook. This book also contains exercises to work through that aim to teach you about the ways we distort reality. It completely changed the way I looked at situations.
